FAQ

Will I be exposed to X-rays (or other damaging examinations)?

We perform almost all examinations without using X-rays. The main examination method is MRT, this is free of side effects.

X-rays are used only in 2 selected cases (lung cancer screening and CT of the heart). Both examination procedures are performed only in the scope of verifiable study protocols (e.g. ELCAP study) or for instance on recommendation of a cardiologist. These examinations concern only patients with quite specific risk profiles. The ELCAP study is indeed not yet concluded, but first intermediate results prove since 2004 the expedient use of CT in lung cancer screening (see publications and recommendations by Dr. Henschke, head of the ELCAP study). The CT examinations are performed as ultra-low dose CT and lie far below 1 mSv, therefore below natural radiation exposure. The CT examinations in lung cancer screening can be repeated annually because of their only slight radiation exposure. The CT examination of the heart is accompanied by only low radiation exposure (1-2 mSv). This corresponds approximately to the natural radiation exposure that one receives in one year. Since heart CT should be performed only once in a lifetime, the radiation exposure is not significant when extrapolated over the lifetime.
